Chisel Experiments
Переглядів 8 тис.10 місяців тому
I want to explore making hand files in the shop, and that requires some tools. In the previous video, I made an anvil to help protect the file teeth when cutting. To do the cutting, I need some chisels. Not sure which steel would be best, I made an assortment: O-1(oil hardening), W-1(water hardening) and the air hardening steels: D2, H13 and S-7. The cutting angle is 50 degrees, found in the bo...

At least that's what I'm calling this one. A suitable spoon for forge-welding projects. The spoon bowl doesn't need to be large, but the length is important to keep you from burns while the steel is at a welding heat. Thank you for watching! You're awesome. Anyang 25 Ton Compression Test

Experiment time. I have a new press in the shop and wanted to do a test of its' compression. To make things fair, I cut all round stock to 3" tall and heated to 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit. *This is strict compression. You can forge beyond this dimension if you use additional tooling to isolate the forging contact points. The results are as follows: 1" compressed to 9/16" 1.25" - 3/4" 1.5" - 7/ 8"...
Making Matsuyani: Japanese Pitch

Here is my attempt at making Matsuyani, a Japanese hard pitch for repousse. The recipe comes from Ford Hallam, who was kind enough to post this, years ago on the Carving Path Forum. weird, I just used chrome and kept the dies hot and cooled the bearing between heats.

Isn't your pitch exceedingly hard? It would be too hard for Repousse work. My pitch is 50% resin, and 40% castor oil with the last 10% being beeswax and charcoal. If I want it harder, I'll add a bit of marble dust (I found plaster would clump and it was hard to get it smooth) but marble dust works well, and I can get it free from places that make monuments and gravestones.
